Chess Board

The chess board is the surface on which the game is played. The board is has 64 equally sized squares of alternating color. Pieces are moved around the board in an attempt to capture the opponent's king.

The assortment of chess boards available is virtually infinite. Sizes range from small portable boards to large kitchen table sized and even outdoor boards meant to be played with life-sized pieces. They are generally made from the same material as the chess pieces.

The style of chess board has become a personal statement of the owner. Classic looks, themes, and construction material are all a matter of personal taste. Many game and hobby shops, as well as numerous dedicated Web sites will have a wide variety of styles and prices to choose from.
